A Tale of Two Experiments: Ultrafast Rainbows and Classical Atoms
Doug Schumacher
Ohio State University
This is no bait-and-switch. We really do generate ultrafast rainbows in Smith 1181. Ultrafast rainbows are useful! You will soon find them in high speed communication systems and in medical instrumentation, and they may help replace atomic clocks. I will describe what they are and what we have learned about them. I confess there is no such thing as a classical atom, but they may be more classical than you think. We performed an experiment to find out.
