The holographic correspondence between ordinary non-gravitational field theories and theories containing dynamical gravity in higher dimensions has led to a new insight
into the nature of gravity. At the same time, it has mapped difficult problems in quantum field theory to classical problems in gravity, opening up the possibility of
applications to particle physics and condensed matter physics. This talk will review the conceptual foundations of this correspondence, and its applications to understand a variety of problems both in gravity and in field theory, with emphasis on recent work on non-equilibrium dynamics.
